Two stats matter. Hyperdrive range is the headline — a top S-class roll adds up to 265 light-years per module. Warp cell efficiency is the quiet half of the value: A-class and S-class modules each add +100 percent fuel efficiency, and the bonuses stack multiplicatively, so one efficiency module halves your per-jump fuel cost, two drop it to a third, and three drop it to a quarter — five percent of a tank per jump, or roughly ten jumps from a single warp cell. For core runs and galaxy hops, efficiency modules often save more time than raw range does.
Selection differs from merchant to merchant, so serious range-hunters hop systems, check every starship technology merchant, and buy only high rolls. Outlaw systems are worth the detour: their X-class stock can roll up to 320 light-years, beyond what any S-class module offers, though the floor of that range is low enough that most X rolls are junk.
The hard rule, and the one that catches every new player: three modules maximum. Install a fourth upgrade module of the same type and the game disables all of them until you dismantle back down to three. Every hyperdrive-family item — modules, the colored drives, the base drive — feeds an adjacency bonus of about five percent into each bordering item, and those bonuses stack on top of module stats before supercharged slots multiply the result.
The practical layout rules are simple. Cluster everything: base hyperdrive, three modules, and whichever colored drives you keep should form one block, not scatter across tabs. Put your highest-range modules in supercharged inventory slots (added in the Waypoint update), because those slots multiply the technology installed in them. And keep the colored drives touching the module cluster — they have no stats of their own to boost, but they feed bonuses into the modules beside them.
A lazy scattered installation and a tight optimized one can differ by hundreds of light-years on identical hardware. Before grinding for better modules, rearrange what you already own.
The Range Math: What You Can Actually Reach
Total jump range is base drive plus module bonuses plus adjacency and supercharged multipliers, then nudged by your hull. The documented progression:

The jump from “unplaced” to “optimized” is adjacency and supercharged slots doing their work, and it is why placement is a free upgrade. Fuel: Warp Cells, Hypercores, and Efficiency
Range gets the glory; fuel does the work. A warp cell is crafted from antimatter and antimatter housing, which are themselves built from chromatic metal and condensed carbon, and oxygen and ferrite dust, respectively.
If you would rather buy than craft, the Warp Hypercore is the premium option: a single hypercore fully charges a hyperdrive by itself — the equivalent of four warp cells — and its blueprint comes from manufacturing facilities and operations centres, or the Synthesis Laboratory aboard the anomaly.
